Very popular resources in this section are the weekly programmes teaching the high frequency key words. The High Frequency Word - sentences programme goes for twelve weeks, with a different sentence using key words each week and back-up practice worksheets. The first sentence and worksheets are free for you to try, the rest are only available for subscribers. The key words are presented as flashcards for the teacher to play games such as pairs and to look at word order in the sentence. There are a number of follow-up worksheets to help reinforce the learning of these words. Try the Codebreaker, a popular way to link word work with basic number .

If your child is not ready for this formal approach then try the My First Sentences pages. They are again using mostly high frequency key words but in a simpler , less structured way. Young children like repetition, they feel secure in something familiar, so print out the worksheets more than once. A real challenge for a child is to do a worksheet independently from an adult helper.
